Student Spotlight: Summer Hill
Summer Hill is a senior in the Bachelor of Health Science program following the General Health Science track. She hopes to attend dental school in the future and further her dreams of dedicating her life to helping others. Summer has combined her interest in dentistry and her passion for health care to choose her career path. Her goal is to work at a nonprofit and ensure that all individuals who need dental care will have proper access to it. Summer has always had the desire to aid others any way she could and her path in life has only grown clearer through her volunteer work
As a Sophomore at the University of Florida, Summer started her volunteer work at UF Health Shands Hospital in the Endodontics department, which specializes in root canal treatment. She volunteered for two consecutive semesters and was able to gain a better understanding of just how much hard work and dedication it takes to specialize in an area of dentistry. Through this experience she was able to observe routine treatments as well as advanced surgical procedures. The time she spent in the department was enlightening and led to her interest in the varying areas of dental specialization.
Summer broadened her horizons even further by volunteering in the general dentistry Student Clinics her junior year and currently during her senior year. One of the countless reasons Summer chose to attend the University of Florida and pursue Health Science is because the University of Florida College of Dentistry is the only publicly-funded dental school in the state of Florida. Not only that, but it is leaps and bounds above it’s other competitors in education, research and service leadership. Through her volunteer work in the Student Clinics she is able to work with a wide range of patients with a large spectrum of differing dental needs. She is beyond thankful for the experiences she has had while volunteering at UF Health as it is truly what sparked her interest in non-profit dental work.
In addition to her work with UF Health, Summer is also a member of the Health Science Student Organization (HSSO) and has engaged in several volunteer opportunities. She has participated in Light the Night, Stomp the Swamp, March of Dimes, and Wheelchair Basketball, just to name a few. Summer credits HSSO for providing students within the club with numerous opportunities to help their university and the Gainesville community. She is also currently working to get her CPR and EMR certification to expand her volunteer work even further.
Outside of the classroom, Summer enjoys spending time with her friends and family, going to Gator football games, exercising, boating, and traveling. She looks to the future with a smile and cannot wait to see all that she and her peers are able to accomplish.
