Student Spotlight: Alexis Tellis
Alexis is a senior in the Bachelor of Health Science program on the General Health Science track. Alexis plans on attending medical school with the interest of studying dermatology. She began her undergraduate career as a nursing major on a Naval ROTC scholarship. After shadowing various medical professionals, she altered her major to align with her long term career goals. Alexis has aspirations of becoming a doctor in the United States Navy, and strives to be a leader of professionalism, integrity, and implement high caliber patient-centered care in medicine.
Alexis actively seeks opportunities that will challenge her academic growth, and prepare her for a career in medicine. For example, Alexis is currently involved in the Bachelors of Health Science Honors Program, where she is participating in academic research under Dr. Nicole Ennis Whitehead. Alexis’ honors thesis focuses on examining the influence of depression, anxiety, and quality of life measures on the use of Internet resources during cancer care. Alexis hopes that her research will reveal information that can help one better understand those who seek Internet sources, which will open the door for further research to improve Internet resources that are available.
In addition to research, Alexis is involved in a handful of extra-curricular activities throughout campus and in the Gainesville community. Alexis serves as a member of UF’s Pre-Health Honors Society, Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED), and volunteers regularly with TOPSoccer. With AED, Alexis participates in community service projects that improve various aspects of the Gainesville community, and works to fundraise for the Florida Diabetes Camp and Relay for Life. When volunteering with TOPSoccer, she works closely with young athletes to improve their physical, mental and emotional growth and development through the sport of soccer. Alexis is also a member of the Florida Cicerones, where she serves as an official student ambassador of the University of Florida. With the Florida Cicerones, she gives campus tours to future Gators, works with the University Athletic Association to host potential athletes, and serves the UF Alumni Association.
